A Campbell-Stokes sunshine autograph is used to record or measure the sunshine duration of a day in northern or southern equatorial regions. The recording takes place on cards that are furnished with a time mark and placed over a high-quality polished glass ball acting as a „burning glass“. Due to the high temperatures in the centre of the combustion point of the glass ball, the position of the sun is burnt onto the heat-sensitive cards. Joint with the time mark, it can be specified exactly at what strength and for how long the sun was shining. With the burning of the solar radiation on the cards the information is physically present, but not apparent in any other form. What stays is the remains of the storage- or carrier medium.

The starting material for this compositions was the digitally processed data (from all cards (kindly provided by the ZAMG) that recorded the entire solar radiation in Linz Hörsching in 2008. The data was modified (and vice versa) with computers, Doepfer analog-modular synthesizer, UHER Royal Deluxe tape-recorder, hydrophones, bowed metal- and glass-plates, field-recordings etc.

I had a first listen without any briefing. Was transfixed. Will re-visit many times. The background references I've yet to read will no doubt only amplify. I think of Patrick White's "Voss" with the final track titled "epilogue: a frontier approached, its retreat a mirror" mobymoby ross clendinning
